There is a difference between Journal and book indexing. While journal indexing deals with serial publication book indexing is connected to one time publication only. In case of journal indexing, one should pay close attention to terminology, cross-referencing and users. The following points are to be kept in mind for Journal Indexing
1. Users- Can be researchers, writers,
librarians, historians etc.
2. Cross-references- English is an ever
changing language. Terms like aged people evolve to be called as elderly
people, new terms like9/11 emerge. There is a need to Cross-reference these terms.
3. Locators- Books are standalone
reading material but Journals come in serials. The details of volume issues
year related to a journal can be written in bold/italics. Abbreviations can be used.
Pictures graphs images can be best indexed by using Abbreviation suffix.
How to index
Introductory
note should be included while indexing. Always a separate index for abbreviations,
books reviewed, chemical names, and terminologies is asked. A better
understanding of the indexing software makes things easier. The names of the
author listed can also represent the title of their work.
Subject
Indexes- The journals are related to a particular subject area. Today plethora
of journals are available under every specific subject. This makes subject
indexing very challenging. Usage of qualifiers, headings and subheadings has to
be made. Some indexing agencies provide a form to be filled for the indexing
purpose.
Compilation of the serials is a 2 way method.
The work of an indexer starts at the end of the year, when all the publications
are available. The indexer can make a provisional or 6 monthly index for the
editorial board.
